Erik Hall (1981) is a musician and producer from Chicago, IL. Whether working alone or in collaboration, Hall excels as a one-man band and engineer, regularly seeing a project from early demo, onto full tracking, and through to final mix. Rooted in his Chicago rock and experimental music community, Hall recently moved his recording studio to his new home in rural southwest Michigan, just 1.5 hrs outside the city. There, he and guests write and record amid a natural open space, unencumbered by noise and neighbors.
Under his own recording and touring moniker, In Tall Buildings, Hall creates densely layered and slyly understated pop. The project has yielded three full-length, home-recorded albums and has seen him tour with Broken Social Scene, Natalie Prass, and Lord Huron, among others. Lyrically, Hall pinpoints universal conflicts of human connectivity and self-growth. His newest album, Akinetic (2018, Western Vinyl), highlights our emotional and cognitive inertia, the consequences of how it conducts us, and how we deal with our inability, or unwillingness to change.
Erik is also a regular collaborator with Wild Belle, having performed the rhythm section tracks and co-engineered their Columbia Records debut, Isles (2013) and subsequent releases. As a touring sideman, he has appeared at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Conan, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Hall is currently developing his newest project, Lundhall - his first collection of instrumental works. Loosely informed by heroes Arvo Pärt and Brian Eno, and filed alongside contemporaries like Nils Frahm and Stars Of The Lid, these new microcosmic pieces shift from strictly generative music, to cinematic, to truly ambient. Lundhall is a full-length album in progress with a release TBD.
